Check out the spectacular immersion assembly from our teachers for Term 3's inquiry topic: Guardians of the Galaxy. In Team 5, we will be investigating the impact the moon has on Earth.

Year 8 Leadership Camp 2017
Y8 Leadership 2017 from SchoolTV on Vimeo.
From Mrs Tele'a!
Here's some pics we captured while away on our leadership camp this year! Wednesday 26th - Friday 28th May. Our group was slightly smaller this time around but still jam packed with a lot of fun and learning opportunities! We had a range of workshops where our students had to step and out as leaders and active team members.
Key phrases like 'Build up, positive self talk, service to leadership 'O le ala i le pule o le tautua', show support and we kept a focus on. Why do we have camp? Naturally as year 8 students there is an expectation that students will step up and lead. This camp is to support our students to do this. You'll all agree the act of leadership and even teamwork is not something all people do naturally, many of us need to shown and taught this! So camp is where we get to do this together without any distractions! The building of self confidence to stand, speak and participate was developed during camp. We took part in - leading groups around rotations, taking charge in team challenges, and showing 'kaha' when we needed to be brave. Being the hosts even during our meal times was a job all teams carried out which included prayers in all our various languages, songs and chants that always made meal time so enjoyable!
We have video that we are currently editing so you can see for yourself what we've shared here. A big shout out to all the year 8 students, their whanau, teachers for the great support you gave. We are very thankful!

GET WATER WISE! - Te Taiao o Tāmaki - Te Oro Celebration
During the last week of Term 1, students from different schools in the Manaiakalani cluster came together at Te Oro in Glen Innes to share their learning on the inquiry theme -Te Taiao o Tāmaki/The Environment of Tāmaki.
OUR CONTRIBUTION: Students from Room 2 created a short movie, 'Get Water Wise!' to make people aware how easy it is to waste water and to suggest different ways to save water at home. Check out our movie below.
BACKGROUND: In the last couple of weeks it has been raining very hard. The heavy rain has unsettled silt in dams at a treatment plant where Auckland gets about half of its water from.
This means the supply of clean drinking water in Auckland is now very low because only half the usual amount of water has been treated and is okay for us to drink.
This is the worst water crisis in Auckland for 23 years!
ISSUE: Until the rain stops and the silt in the dams settles again, Aucklanders need to use less water than usual. In fact, as a city, we need to save 50 million litres of water a day. This equals 20 litres or 2 large buckets of water for each person, every day.
If we run out of the clean water supply, we will have to use partially treated water - we will need to boil it before we can drink it safely.
SOLUTION: Let's find as many ways as possible to reduce the amount of water we use each day while we wait for the silt in the dams to settle and more water can be treated.

Visual Mihi - DLO Project - Term 1
Nau mai, haere mai!
The first DLO project for every student in Team 5 in 2017 was to create their own visual mihi. Each student had to design a graphic that included a picture of themselves and four images that represented things that had personal meaning or importance to them. Check out the visual mihi created by Bradley, Angelica, Benioni, Aretafaye, Angel and Sheales.
What do they have in common? What items are different? What images would you include in your own visual mihi?
Feel free to visit their blogs (click on the name links above) and leave a comment.
