Memories - 2020 Year 8 Leadership Camp , Thames

Just in case you missed PENN today, check out the movie below for highlights from the Year 8 Leadership Camp that took place in the first week of August at the start of Term 3.

The Kauaeranga Valley Christian Camp hosted Pt England School for 3 days and 2 nights. We appreciate how lucky we were to get to camp this year - 4 days after we got back, the Auckland region was put into Lockdown 2.0 at Level 3.

Here are special memories of what they got up to - trying out new activities, making new friends and stepping out of their comfort zones! Enjoy!

This week students had to explain and justify that the tikanga we follow for our Team 5 assembly (in the street at school and online with Google Meets) is appropriate and honouring.

Read Zamera's thoughtful response as she explains what we do in the senior block at Pt England School for our team assemblies and why

Rātā and the Tōtara Tree - Myths and Legends - ZAEEDA

This morning we had a literacy google meet. We at another Maori Myth, called Rata and the Totara tree. It was about a Maori man who was looking for a tree to craft a waka for his village. He wanted to get away from the island as Tangaroa and Tawhirimatea we going to have a war which would destroy the village. Rata found a large Totara tree but forgot to follow to recite a karakia of invocation for Tane Mahuta, this lead many birds and insects to restore the tree to its original state.

We had to create a storyboard which I quite enjoyed doing, because it helped me get a good idea of what happened in order. Next we had to break up a portion of a text into word groups, we then had to record ourselves reading it fluently. I had to re-record this last time so I tried extra hard to tell the story well and fluently. Next we had to do word groups, I wasn't sure how many we had to choose and use in sentences but I did two of the ones I found most interesting.

We then had to do our create task we could choose 1 out of 2 activities, I decided to try making a movie review as I loved the message the clip on slide 3 explained. Overall I enjoyed this task and like how there we 2 parts to our literacy task, looking forward to doing more!

For this task I had to find out, how many metres would Kauri run. If he ran 3 laps, and how many laps will
Kauri need to run to complete a distance of 4km. Then for question 3 we had to plan a daily running schedule for Kauri fro one month. How many laps will he need to run each day to hit the target of 7 km each week. We had to write our answers on a piece of paper.
