Chromosomes (Genomics) : Dr Thierry

Today we were lucky to have a visit from Dr Thierry to help us to continue our Genomics learning.  He shared an activity to show us different pairs of chromosomes and explained how they carry genetic information from each of our parents.

Humans have 23 pairs or 46 chromosomes. Each of us has a unique combination of chromosomes - we inherit one copy from each of our parents.

One pair of our chromosomes determines if we will be male or female. Dr Thierry really blew our minds when he told us that every human being starts life as female (XX chromosome pair). Before birth this can change to XY to make a male.

Blog of the Week: LENNOX: Zebrafish - Genomics 2019

We learned about Zebrafish and how they have 70% of our DNA they use zebrafish for testing sometimes to see if they can heal humans because they have 70% of our genes so they use them to test if something can cure the human. and they have different stripes and they grow really really fast and there eggs are transparent too. They eat zooplankton, phytoplankton, insects insect larvae worms.
