A colourful koha! Year 8 Art Project - 2020

Every year, the Year 8s work on an art project - a chance to leave behind a koha to celebrate their time at Pt England School, however long or short!

This year, Ms. Tapuke gave the Year 8s their design brief: create a pattern using only triangles mixing paint using three primary colours - red, blue and yellow.

Starting with a 1.8m piece of treated decking timber - each piece was primed with undercoat (Shout out to  Mrs Tele'a, Mrs Ilaoa and Ms Tipene!) and then the preparation began before touching any paint!

Each student could work with a buddy or on their own to mark up their design - thinking about the size of each triangle and the overall pattern or effect they wanted to create using a set of cool colours (in blues or greens) or warm colours (reds, yellows. oranges).

We used a LOT of masking tape to define the sections of the board for each colour - an important step to get right so that the edges between each colour would be clear and defined. Check out the sharp lines on AJ Faleono and Jezakaia's work - well done you two!

Spread across Room 2, the street and Room 4 (Massive thank yous to Mrs Stone, Mr Hughes, Tyson, Mr Wright and Miss McCartney). the students got into it - having fun experimenting (= making lots of mess! LOL!) with different colour combinations from blood reds, delicate pinks to bright yellows, baby blues and forest greens!

A message from Ms. Tapuke:

A huge PAKIPAKI to the Year 8s of 2020 - you should be really proud of yourselves. After the year we had, you still stuck with it right to the end and smashed this art project in the final weeks of Term 4.

Keep an eye on the wall of the Whare Ako to see your  masterpieces on display!
(Cheers in advance Mr Jacobsen!)

Last day of School!

It's our last day of school for 2018 and we had some time in our home class this morning to say farewell to the Year 8s who are off to High School next year. There was a mixture of sadness, laughter, tiredness and excitement.

Blog of the Week: SABRINA - Team 5 - Speech Contest

Sabrina shares her thoughts below on the Speech Contest finals for our Year 7 and 8 students last week. Feel free to read more of her posts here.

On Friday Team 5 and Team 3 came together and there was 15 students that came and shared there speech to everyone and the person that said her speech was Amelia and her speech was about her nana and her mother and Amelia Nana was the cleaner at a school in. Pakuranga and it is called Riverina and her nana always smile at Amelia when she sees her. Also Amelia told us that her nana had passed way and my favorite speech was Muba
The most entertaining for me was president Muba. His topic was about if I were a president for a day. He talked about if he was a president for a day, the first thing he would do, would to provide a shelter for the homeless people. The second thing he would do, would to Take the pollution level down as well as bill depts. And the last thing he would do is to make the world a better place. The reason why I thought President muba was entertaining was because he would provide a shelter for the homeless people, and the first thing that came to my mind was that he would be an awesome president one day. He’s actually funny as well, he even knows how to make people laugh and that is one of the things I like to do as well. Is to make people happy and also make them laugh as well. it was a great time i enjoyed it

Year 8 Leadership Camp 2017

Y8 Leadership 2017
from SchoolTV on Vimeo.

From Mrs Tele'a!

Here's some pics we captured while away on our leadership camp this year! Wednesday 26th - Friday 28th May. Our group was slightly smaller this time around but still jam packed with a lot of fun and learning opportunities! We had a range of workshops where our students had to step and out as leaders and active team members.

Key phrases like 'Build up, positive self talk, service to leadership 'O le ala i le pule o le tautua', show support and we kept a focus on. Why do we have camp? Naturally as year 8 students there is an expectation that students will step up and lead. This camp is to support our students to do this. You'll all agree the act of leadership and even teamwork is not something all people do naturally, many of us need to shown and taught this! So camp is where we get to do this together without any distractions! The building of self confidence to stand, speak and participate was developed during camp. We took part in - leading groups around rotations, taking charge in team challenges, and showing 'kaha' when we needed to be brave. Being the hosts even during our meal times was a job all teams carried out which included prayers in all our various languages, songs and chants that always made meal time so enjoyable!

We have video that we are currently editing so you can see for yourself what we've shared here. A big shout out to all the year 8 students, their whanau, teachers for the great support you gave. We are very thankful!
