READING: Te Ika A Maui (Myths and Legends) - Pisirina

This week we learnt read different versions of the traditional Māori story of how Maui used a magic hook to fished up the North Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Read through the slideshow from Pisirina - check out slide 4 and listen to her fluent and expressive reading of an excerpt from one of the texts.

Below is Pisirina's CREATE task - a review of the short film about Te Ika A Maui.
Visit her blog and leave a comment about her work this week.

Blogger of the Week: Zamera - Letter to Ms. Tapuke

This week in Literacy class, Zamera wrote a letter to Ms. Tapuke to share more about herself, her family and the goals she wants to focus on this year.  Check out her letter below. Write in the comments and tell Room 2 what goals you have set for yourself in 2020!

Dear Ms Tapuke,

My name is Zamera. I’m 12 years old and a Year 8 student at Pt England school. I am the second youngest out of my family. I have 1 younger brother and 2 older sisters. My two older sister’s namesare Sheales and Juliet and my younger brother’s name is Jeremiah, my 2 older sisters go to college and my younger brother comes to Pt England as well. My Dad is Maori, Niuean and my Mum is Niuen and Cook Island.

I love playing Sports. I play T20 Cricket for Uni-(University Cricket Club), I play Touch, Netball, Softball, Rugby, Tag, Volleyball and Cricket for Pt England School. This Year in 2020, I'm going to be trying out Ki o Rahi for School.

My Favourite subject is Maths and Writing, I don’t really like Reading that much. I like Writing because I get to write down my thoughts about something, what I imagine and also write about anything. I also like Maths because I get to think about the questions hard and when my brain starts to hurt then that means i’m learning something new.

At school I really like playing cards with my friends. At morning tea me and my friends and some other people like playing a game called Cheat, the way you play it is you have to have a partner and you also have to have a signal, then the dealer gives each partner four cards each then the dealer also
put four cards on the table and you have to get the same four cards and when you get it then you do your signal and your partner has to say your name and cheat. My teachers in Team 5 are really funny and really interesting. They give us hard work but even though it’s hard it will help us with college work.

A fun fact about me is I like to cook, my Dad is the person who taught me how to cook and also my Mum.But Me and my Dad like cooking homemade burgers with homemade patties and it’s delicious, we also like making spaghetti bolognese and lots of other delicious things. Sometimes at home I cook dinner for my whole family and then I don’t have to clean up afterwards. I really enjoy cooking!

Yours Sincerely,

Zamera

Blog of the Week: INEZ Explanation Writing - Regular Exercise

This week our blog of the week is from Inez who explains 'why regular exercise is important'.

Read her awesome piece of writing below and check out her blog to see more of her work.

Greetings, I will be explaining ‘Why is regular exercise important’. There will be three main points that I will focus on, in this piece of writing. Why we need to exercise, What happens if we don’t exercise, and How you can do regular exercises.

Firstly, Why do we need to exercise? It is important for everyone to exercise, because it will lower the risks of us having diseases. Also it’s unhealthy for our bodies to not get exercise. When you exercise it helps you sleep better. Exercising can also help those who struggle in life. It can also take your mind off things and make you feel better. It can sometimes be boring and tiring, but if you make it fun, you will enjoy it. When we exercise it reduces stress from our minds.

So, what happens if we don’t exercise? If you don’t exercise it can cause the immune system to weaken. It also makes it harder for our bodies to fight viruses, such as the flu and cold. You’re likely going to find yourself getting sick more often, if you do not exercise.

Finally, How can you do regular exercises? You can do your own exercises at home. There are awesome sites online that can help you exercise at home. Also if you sign up to a local gym, there are people, classes, and sessions, that can help you with your regular exercises.

In conclusion, regularly exercising can help make a difference in your life. But it’s all up to you if you want to exercise or not. I think it’s good for our bodies to get exercise. Even though I don’t really like exercising.
