Kids @ Work 2019 - Bike Track Monitors!

In our school assembly this morning, received certificates from Mr Jacobsen for their efforts as part of the Kids @ Work programme at Pt England School. This year may students from Room 2 got involved as Milk monitors and as Tech Monitors. The team also included four Year 8 students - Lucy, Maria, Nasibah and Thet Htar - who formed the Bike Track team. On fine sunny days their lunchtimes were pretty busy making sure that each kid on the school bike track was fitted with the right helmet and using the right sized bike. They also had the unglamorous job of putting all the gear back in the shed!

Great job Lucy, Maria, Nasibah and Thet Htar!

Rainbow's End Magic - Year 7s End of Year Trip

On Wednesday 20th November, the year sevens were lucky enough to visit Rainbows End. This is a trip that is held every year, to celebrate the end of Year seven, before they come back as the leaders of the school in the new year.

They spent the entire day there - got into small groups with a parent helper and then got to explore the park with them. Here is a promo movie of the trip!

Chromosomes (Genomics) : Dr Thierry

Today we were lucky to have a visit from Dr Thierry to help us to continue our Genomics learning.  He shared an activity to show us different pairs of chromosomes and explained how they carry genetic information from each of our parents.

Humans have 23 pairs or 46 chromosomes. Each of us has a unique combination of chromosomes - we inherit one copy from each of our parents.

One pair of our chromosomes determines if we will be male or female. Dr Thierry really blew our minds when he told us that every human being starts life as female (XX chromosome pair). Before birth this can change to XY to make a male.

After 10 weeks of competition, the Year 7 Eagles played their final game of the 2019 Netball season on Tuesday night. The girls have come such a long way since Term 2 and the first grading game with most of the players having never played netball before. Thanks so much to Ana Henry for stepping in to be the coach - she gave up her Monday and Thursday afternoons to train the girls and build up their confidence and netball skills. All that effort has paid off because the Year 7 Eagles finished the season UNDEFEATED! Congratulations girls - don't forget to bring your whanau along to the Pt England Netball prizegiving on September 12th to celebrate!

See if you can spot our very own Room 2 players - Mamarae (Tunui) and Jazzelle! Well done girls!

Matariki 2019

Matariki Day at Pt England School was amazing - every student had the chance to celebrate the Maori New Year. There were so many activities to choose from making movies to cooking, from learning the ukulele to hand crafts.

38 students from Year 1 all the way up to Year 8 got together with Ms. Tapuke and Mrs Stone to learn the legend of Matariki. They then learnt about making art with wool and nails.  First, everyone chose a pattern. Then they used a hammer to nailed it to a painted board (check out the videos below to see Terry and a couple of the little kids). Some of the seniors helped out the little kids which was awesome! Finally they got to choose funky coloured wool to twist around in cool patterns.

Have a go yourself - be careful! Watch your fingers with the hammer!

Weave an environment for a better future."

This is the theme for Samoan Language Week in 2019. In Team 5 we have enjoyed learning new words and phrases we can use everyday like "tulou" - an expression to use to excuse yourself if your movements are going to obstruct the view of others.

Check out some highlights from today's Samoan Language Week assembly.

Blog of the Week: MARIA Year 8 Leadership Camp 2019

Check out this blog post from Maria, a Year 8 from Room 2 and her thoughts about the Leadership Camp in Thames.

Last week Wednesday we all went to team 5 block when the bell rang, after we
all sat down including the year 7’s after they did the mihi, karakia we started to
sing the song that was chosen because it was a normal day but it was different
because of the notices was short. After we finish Mr Burt came to give the whole
team 5 a talk about how the year 8’s are going camp and the year 7’s needed to
take over the prefects because the year 8 prefects were going to the year 8 leadership camp.

When we were finish we all went to the hall to go pick up the bags and the
suitcase
the instructions were to pick up any bag that was around when we pick up the
bags we put it on the bus when we started to finish putting the bags on the bus
we went to go and sit on our buses that was given to us to stay on. It took 2 hours
to get to the kauaeranga valley christian camp. When we were on the bus we
were playing talking to our buddies about how it would look like and i thought on
the other side of new Zealand would be cities but it’s a countryside with farms and
animals but it was cool looking at the animals and the farms.

When we had arrive at kauaeranga valley christian camp we all were meeting the
people that was introducing themselves to us, after they have introduce
themselves we started to put our gear into the cabins that we have bring to
stay at the camp. After we had put our gear into the camp we weren’t aloud to
put our sleeping bag and pillow onto the bed because the teacher said cause we
had a lot of time to play today we had our first activity for thames we had go kart it
was fun i keep on going on it and everyone else was, it was so fun. We only had 2
days a night and he we had fun together when we had arrive and on the other days
we had a disco on our last day at camp it was so fun we had so many light off and
there was colourful lights shining. Then we started to go sleep before we hittin the
road back to school but we had a special place to go it was a garden with some
animals in their and plus their was secret pranks hidden it was so fun and funny.
After we were finish we started to go back to school and go back home.

Blog of the Week: NEVAEH - Co-ordinate Graphs

Task Description: This is the task we have been working on by using co-ordinates and X axis and Y axis.  As you could see that the shape is a Easter egg but we didn't just draw it like that, we had a sheet that had co-ordinates on and we had to plot the points on where the number says.  Then after plotting the lines we had to connect the dots and it will make the shape of a Easter egg.

Term 2: Immersion Assembly - I Like Your Latitude!

Welcome to Term 2 at Pt England School - today we kicked off the new term with an Immersion Assembly. Read Nevaeh's blog post below to find out what happened!

On Monday the 29th of April, today is the start of  term 2 for 2019.  The whole of Pt England School had a school Immersion Assembly we had this theme called  " I Like Your Latitude. " Mr Burt was talking to us about what Latitude means. It took a while until he had finished, but when he finished we had moved on to watching each teachers from each teams making a movie and  a live performance  about what the team is going to  work about and talk about.  After watching team 1, 2 and 3's movie, my favourite one was watching team 4's movie.

Team 4's  movie was really funny, the four teachers were called to go to Pak'n Save for no reason, but then one of the teacher's phone was ringing from the Mr Goodwin which was the one who said to go all the way to Pak'n Save, after the call the teachers had to find their way from Pak'n Save to Pt England School.  They couldn't use their phones for google maps they had to use a map and compass for help. They got the staff and went of finding their way.  The funny part about this was one of the teachers Mrs Sio went off trying her way of getting there all the teachers thought that she would get them back to school cause really looked like she would.  But instead of getting them to school she got them to follow her all way to Great Tongs takeaway and buying her a bag of chicken, so that Mrs Sio could eat all of the other teacher's was really mad at Mrs Sio.

When they had finally got to school they were really happy and glad they had finally made, but they were also mad at Mr Goodwin so the teachers burst into the class rooms they were gonna have meeting but the 4 teachers were just mad at him so they were yelling at Mr Goodwin.  Miss West yelled at Mr Goodwin saying " Why don't you try finding your way back home, without using your phone." so she took his phone and they all walked away slamming the door and leaving Mr Goodwin having to do a meeting by himself.

Every first day of the term Pt England School will have an Immersion Assembly to see what other teams will be doing for the term and Inquiry, also to find out what the theme is for the whole of term 2.

Careers Talk: Senior Nurse - Mary-Anne Ross

Check out this blog post from Maria sharing her impressions of a visit to our class from a senior nurse at Auckland Hospital

Today we had a special talk about how our heart works by Mary- Anne was friends with Ms. Tapuke as Kiriwai Tapuke they were still friends since 1976 and they were friends when they were 5 years old. They were in room 23 Sunnynook primary school. They have been friends since they were little Mary - Anne is a Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. We were talking about how our heart goes and how fast it goes, then we started talking about how heart disease is different from the good heart it’s different heart disease is when your heart starts to stop and you get heart disease. In the middle, we started to ask Mary-Anne question about the tools for the doctors then we started asking questions like is a nurse the same as doctors she said no because nurse organizes the equipment for the patients they make sure it’s the right one for their patients. Doctors do different work they check on the people about the health of their hearts. We started to watch a video about how the heart works inside how it opens then close when the blood comes up when you are breathing. The heart muscle is special as it pumps blood around your body. The blood provides your body with oxygen and nutrients. If something is wrong with your heart it can affect other parts of your body. That's why it’s important to look after your heart and keep it healthy.

Blog of the Week: CINQUAIN - Room 2 Literacy Class

This week in Writing we have been learning how to write cinquain, a type of poetry invented in the United States over a hundred years ago. It is similar to the Japanese haiku but has a style all of its own.

A cinquain (pronounced sin-cane) is poem that tells a short story in 5 lines. It has a special syllable pattern of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 2. It can rhyme but it doesn't have to!

Check out all of the cinquains from our class of Year 7 & 8 students - see if the syllable pattern is correct in each poem!

Piñata Day - A Traditional way to celebrate!

For the last two weeks, the JACKSON reading group have been learning about piñata, highly decorated containers made from papier mache, pottery or even cloth and filled up with lollies. Piñata have links in history to different parts of Europe as well as Latin American countries. In Mexico, piñata are traditionally made for birthday celebrations for children.

This week, Nahea, Rozaidah, Skye, AJ M, Ash, Filipe and William worked together to create two Easter Egg piñata.

STEP 1:  Cut or tear up strips of newspaper and use PVA glue to cover a balloon with a couple of layers to make the outside shell.

STEP 2: Listen/watch Skye and Nahea show you how they fill the piñata.

STEP 3: The last layer of the piñata is decorating it with crepe paper to make it bright and colourful!

Check out Rozaidah's blog to get her instructions on how to make your own piñata.

Finally, we got to have some real fun. Ms. Tapuke tied one end of the piñata to a piece of string and hung it up on a pole outside Room 2.

Everyone had the chance to try their piñata skills!

    a)  First they had to wear a blindfold, next
    b) they were given a stick and then they were
    c) turned around a few times and afterwards had try to hit the piñata.

The best job was holding the string tied to the piñata - by pulling the string up and down, you could have fun making sure the person with the stick kept missing!

Well there was lots of yelling and excitement as we watch everyone trying really hard to break the piñata  - it's not as easy as it looks!  Some of the boys gave it a good crack and at one point, the stick went flying over the carpark at one point!

In the end, we took turns smashing up the piñata after each one fell on ground and when they were opened up, we shared out the chocolates.

What traditions do you and your family follow to mark special occasions like a birthday?

Blog of the Week: KING, CALEB - DATA DETECTIVES:Which graph is best?

Room 2's Maths class were practising being DATA DETECTIVES by helping Mr Vogt to figure out when would be the best time to plant shrubs by checking the weather forecast for the next week.

Check out King and Caleb's explanation and their decisions about which graph to use to support their answers. Which graph do YOU think best shows the temperature data?

This our graph bar and line graph that we used to answer a question about Mr Vogt and his precious little Shrubs. Over the week, we had to pick the best days to plant his delicate shrubs, it needed to be above 20 degrees celsius in the day, and it needed to be not hotter than 11 degrees celsius overnight. He is not available on the weekends. Here is our bar chart, If it goes over 20 it good and if it’s 11 degrees or lower it is good. And if it goes lower than 20 or higher than 11, it’s not good.

The next graph we did was the line graph. Another person in our class did a line graph, and it ended up pretty good. So we decided to try it out ourselves, and, as you can see, it worked out amazing. It shows the same information as the bar graph, but it shows the numbers more clearly. Here is our Line Graph.

The aim is to raise $$$ to help pay for fees for the Year  8 camp.

Come down to Pt England School this Saturday morning to support our Senior Students!

Blog of the Week: PISIRINA - Revew - SOMETHING ALIVE by Jem Yoshioka

The Waititi reading group read the story, Something Alive this week. It lead to a lively discussion around the issues of being bi-racial and the importance of knowing your culture and doing your best to keep it alive. Read Pisirina's thoughtful review of the text.
Title: Something Alive
Author: Jem Yoshioka     Genre: Fiction - Based on real story

Summary of book: It is about this girl and her unknown heritage. When I say ‘unknown heritage’, I mean she doesn’t know much about her Japanese side. She gets comments and question that questions her identity and she can’t answer any of them because she doesn’t know enough about her japanese culture. She doesn’t fit in the crowd with her controversial appearance. She then is encouraged by her Grandmother to learn more about her heritage because there is something alive in her that is starting growing.

My thoughts: I liked this book because it shows the point of view of a person who struggles from everyone’s comments on she really is and how she looks. I can somehow relate to this, because at first impression most people think I’m tongan from the way I look. I might look tongan but just because I look tongan it doesn’t mean I’m tongan. I think that’s how I can connect with this character with some experience.
Recommendations :  I personally would recommend this to those in the age group from 9 years to 13 years of age because I think it would be good to read this at the age of 9 so that if this ever happens to you then you can have an idea on what to do and you can just carry on as normal. It is also good to help you develop a good skill which is being empathetic and it is easy to read because it is a comic book.
I’ve learnt … : I learnt that we should be respectful of each other not just by actions but verbally. We never know if just a small question like ‘Where are you from’ can be harsh for the person you are asking. I think if we just think before we talk then there will be less hate comments on others and it will bring peace to the world!

Self-Portraits using Micrography - Ko Wai Au? Who Am I?

Kia ora koutou!

Room 2's movie today for PENN, our school's TV news, was inspired by our inquiry learning topic. In Team 5 this term, the theme is Ko Wai Au? Who Am I?

We each created self-portraits using a special style of graphic art called micrography. The word can be broken down into two parts: micro = small and graphy = letters.

Our teacher took our photo and printed them out onto  A3 sheets of paper. First, we traced the outline of our head, hair and face in pencil and then we replaced all of the lines with words and sentences about ourselves.

Take a look at our art work in this movie and see if you can spot:

a) which student walks to school?
b) which student loves reading and maths?
c) which student likes telling funny jokes all the time?
d) which student's favourite colour is yellow?
e) which student loves to dance?

Blog of the Week: MAMAREI - Polyfest 2019

Have you ever been to Polyfest?? Well, On the 13th of March our whole
of team 5 got a chance to go to Polyfest.
Polyfest is a Pacific event held in Manukau, near A.U.T (Auckland University
Technology).
Polyfest is a place for kids to show other people who they are,
where they came from and what their heritage is.
For Polyfest a whole bunch of other schools were invited to this amazing event.
We had to pay $10 for the bus and for us to get in. We were
put in groups with parent helpers and teachers.
My mum and one of my aunts were one of the helpers. Me, my two older cousins,
my niece and my niece's friend were in a group together with my mum.
